No money involved, just taunting.

Jen squishes the car. I can't buy shirts and the gap. We eat well, and I'm running without anybody chasing me.

Finally, a poll about vegetarian corn dogs

We had an interesting week. We were scheduled to go to Milwaukee on Wednesday, so I worked from home that day. I usually try to make it to the gym early on those days, so I left to pick up the bus about 6:15. At 8:45 I get done and check my voice-mail to hear Jen tell me that she is okay, but that she thinks the car is totaled. She managed to somehow hit a big yellow pole in a parking garage and crush the drivers side of her car. It isn't totaled, but you can't open either door on the drivers side. I took it to the shop and got a rental car for the trip to Milwaukee. We're carless for the next few weeks until the work is done.

Milwaukee was uneventful. She liked the people, but wasn't impressed with the program. It will probably go towards the bottom of the list. It looks like Houston is still in the lead with Seattle and Baltimore coming up in the next month.

We went shopping at the Gap this weekend. I needed Jeans since my existing ones have this habit of falling off. I'm now wearing a 33x32 (down from barely fitting into a 38x30) I have no idea why the length has changed. It may have something to do with the fact that all jeans are now low ride and apparently must be worn around the butt. They fit well and look good and they were on sale for only $20. I got a pair of cords as well. While there, I tried on a couple of polos. The athletic fit ones fit okay, except for the arms. Apparently athletic fit means skinny as people with no arms. I'm going to have to find somewhere else that sells nice polo shirts with a tapered waist and reasonable sized arm holes.

We had some good food in the last week. A sun dried tomato and basil pesto was really good. I ate leftovers for lunch today. We also made a creole pecan coated roughy last night. Finally, we  discovered that vegetarian corn dogs are incredibly good. We're both trying to eat better, so I bought some of those at the grocery on a whim. They are fantastically good.

The marathon training is going well. I ran 21 miles last week, and should do at least 25 this week. I'll be closer to 30 if the weather is nice enough to run outside. The best part of my run (other than the fact that after 8 miles I still felt pretty good) is that the pace feels slow. 18 months ago I couldn't run a mile, and 5.5mph felt like a spring. Now 6.2mph over 8 miles feels a little slow. I'll probably pick up the pace to 6.4 or 6.5 next week when my distance falls back. My goal would be around 7.5mph for training runs. I need about 8.5 to be able to qualify for the Boston marathon, but that's a long way in the future.

Does anybody have suggestions for good running music?

Now accepting suggestions for a new sigline

It's almost as weird as vegetarian chicken strips and meatless taco meat, but the stuff tastes good.

Good suggestion! by mmangino (4.00 / 1) #5 Mon Mar 13, 2006 at 01:38:26 PM EST
I've been listening to System of a Down, but the album I have is only like 40 minutes long. When you've listened to 14 songs, it feels like it should take more that 40 minutes. I don't listen to the ramones for the same reason.

Hmm, I'm picking up some slayer tonight.

Napalm Death by ambrosen (2.00 / 0) #10 Mon Mar 13, 2006 at 03:14:37 PM EST
They beat all comers on song length. Over 50 songs on a standard LP.

They come from the same estate I went to 6th form (read high school) on. Not a pleasant place. For some reason I never managed to go to school in pleasant places, despite being from Bournville, textbook UK leafy suburbia.

Sometimes we add sun dried tomatoes to our by georgeha (2.00 / 0) #3 Mon Mar 13, 2006 at 01:28:44 PM EST
pesto, if we have enough for two bowlfuls, as nine year old only wants basil in hers.

I like Devo for working out, they keep the temp pretty high. I imagine other electronica sorts of music would work too, but I don't know much about that genre.

I'd like to visit Milwaukee for H-D and the breweries, I don't know if I'd like to live there, though.

I'd like to do a NCAA bracket by lm (2.00 / 0) #7 Mon Mar 13, 2006 at 02:14:26 PM EST
But I don't know if I have enough time for research.

I'd like to fill out a bracket based entirely on average GPA of the basketball team and graduation rate of the basketball program weighted by the academic ranking of the school.

I assume you use golf scoring, by mmangino (2.00 / 0) #8 Mon Mar 13, 2006 at 02:53:46 PM EST
i.e. picking the lowest GPA to win the whole thing.

I created a group on ESPN with a group name of Husi and a password of husi

If I actually get around to it ... by lm (2.00 / 0) #11 Mon Mar 13, 2006 at 03:52:20 PM EST
... I want to run two brackets, one predicitng that teams that are best academically will prevail over teams that are ranked lower academically and one that predicts the reverse, and see which has the best results.

It's a bummer, though, that the NCAA changed the way that they measure graduations. I can no longer tease my brother-in-law about his alma mater's zero percent graduation rate for the basketball team.

I'm looking up results for the NCAA this year by lm (2.00 / 0) #13 Mon Mar 13, 2006 at 09:06:19 PM EST
I've gotta wonder what's going through a guy's head when they get a basketball scholarship to a school with a 14% graduation rate for the men's basketball program. Let alone a 0% rate.

But, yeah, my brother-in-law is a UC alumn.

veggie corn dogs by tps12 (2.00 / 0) #9 Mon Mar 13, 2006 at 03:04:51 PM EST
Does that really count as "eating better"? They have less fat, I'm sure, but are still highly processed, and probably not as good of a protein source as regular corn dogs. I hear they're very tasty, however.

Also, shorter widths have more fabric for waists by lm (2.00 / 0) #14 Mon Mar 13, 2006 at 10:07:23 PM EST
USian men's pants are measured in length by inseam only. But the larger the waste, the greater the span from the waist to the inseam. Consequently, a 38x32 will be longer in the leg than a 32x32, even though the inseam for both is 32.

Aha! by mmangino (2.00 / 0) #15 Tue Mar 14, 2006 at 09:26:04 AM EST
That makes sense. I'm a little disappointed that this isn't caused by me growing taller. Oh well. I guess it's time to give up my dream of playing in the NBA.
