Jen matched at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, so we're moving to your fair city in about 13 months time. My little company with the punny name (Elevated Rails for a ruby on rails development shop based in Chicago) sounds a little silly now.

Is there anything important to know before moving? I'm excited to be able to buy a house, since real estate prices seem a little more sane than Chicago. Where are the nice areas to live? I assume I'm going to have to buy a car.

I should write hear more often. Things are going incredibly well. I've been running Elevated Rails full time for about 6 months. I just hired my third developer, so we're doing okay. The cash flow situation is finally under control, and we've been doing quite well. We've helped three startups launch, including one that was the subject of an article in NewsWeek.

That's all for now!

We're talking the CHOP - the hospital at 34th and something-or-other?

20 years ago I lived in that area and there were some nice neighborhoods down around 40th and Baltimore - but that was nice in a bohemian sort of way, and it was 20 years ago. They were really nice neighborhoods in the 19th century; the houses had servants' stairs, stuff like that.

IIRC, they call it soda, not pop by georgeha (2.00 / 0) #2 Wed May 09, 2007 at 03:57:49 PM EST
and they put ketchup on their hotdogs. Cheesesteaks are great, too.

I never bought in to Chicago hotdogs by mmangino (2.00 / 0) #3 Wed May 09, 2007 at 05:22:34 PM EST
Or chicago style pizza for that matter. I've always put ketchup on my hotdogs, and only eat homemade pizza since I can't stand the casserole that they try to sell you here.

I do need to try a cheese steak. That's for sure.

AWESOME! Thursday nights we can drink! <nt> by yankeehack (2.00 / 0) #4 Wed May 09, 2007 at 06:25:51 PM EST
yes, the title was a repost, but I mean it!

I have several co-workers who live in Center City and commute out to the suburbs. CHOP is near UPenn, which if you stay out of West Philly and in center city, you would be fine.

Places where my co workers live include Manyunk, Rittenhouse Square and Center City itself.

You know what is funny? I voted for McCain in 2000 and Obama in 2008. (And let's not forget Edwards in 1998.)

Thank's for the suggestions. Everything I've seen that I liked is in the west. Luckily, we have a friend moving out there next month, so we have somebody to scout for us. I'm definitely excited about the new city.

don't move to a western suburb by nathan (2.00 / 0) #6 Fri May 11, 2007 at 09:26:26 PM EST
Because I-76 sucks at all times of the day. (It's not that the traffic is all that heavy, but rather that there aren't enough lanes.) I know some guys who live in Delaware and commute to Center City. I understand that Delaware housing is very cheap. It's worth looking into.

Thanks! by mmangino (2.00 / 0) #7 Sat May 12, 2007 at 08:35:32 AM EST
We're urban people, so we probably will live close to the city, especially considering my wife will be working 80+ hour weeks. It's good to know that having 76 nearby might not be the win I would expect.

76 is not good anywhere by nathan (2.00 / 0) #8 Wed May 16, 2007 at 01:06:38 PM EST
Not even close to the city. I've seen traffic stopped cold at the 676->76 ramp just past the Amtrak station, meaning that you can't even get on 76, never mind get anywhere on it.
